DA says BISD meeting could be in violation of state law

12News has learned that the Jefferson County District Attorney has warned Beaumont Independent School District trustees that the agenda for Monday night's meeting, "raises a litany of potential violations of state law."

District Attorney Cory Crenshaw notified trustees Monday afternoon that BISD has spent en excess of $1.465 million in legal services which is in excess of the $1.149 million budgeted.  He said that code prohibits the board from voting on expenses that are in excess of an adopted budget.

He raised the same concern in relation to the superintendent's voluntary separation agreement.

Crenshaw also says the voluntary separation agreement was posted to be discussed in closed session.  He said any matters addressed as they relate to binding the district to funding must be considered in the public portion of the meeting.
