DPS spokesperson releases name of man killed in Orange County collision

ORANGE COUNTY - A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety has released the name of a person killed in a head-on collision in Orange County Sunday night.

The deceased is identified as Richard Shelvin, 74, of Port Arthur.

The accident happened around 9:20 p.m. Sunday.

According to a Department of Public Safety trooper on the scene, the accident involved a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Versa.

A news release issued Monday morning says the 2008 Toyota Tacoma truck, driven by Stevan Shonn Smith, 27, of Orange, was traveling south on SH 62.  Smith reportedly failed to drive in a single lane and struck a northbound 2014 Nissan Versa head on.  The Nissan was driven by Mr. Shelvin.

Smith was taken to Orange Baptist hospital and a passenger who was traveling with Smith was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont. Both Shelvin and his passenger were taken to St. Elizabeth where Mr. Shelvin was pronounced deceased.

The condition of the other occupants is unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation.
