12News learns Beaumont I.S.D. might have to postpone crucial votes regarding spending

12News has learned that the Beaumont Independent School District board of trustees could be forced to postpone two crucial votes dealing with spending.

Beaumont I.S.D. trustees are scheduled hold a vote on an item that would approve a voluntary separation agreement with Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois.  They are also set to consider continuing the legal fight to stop a state takeover of the district.

Both items would cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollar.  Sources tell 12News that the trustees cannot vote on spending any more money than what's in the current budget without amending it and the agenda for Monday night's meeting does not mention any budget amendments.

Based on state law, B.I.S.D. could be required to post a new agenda and wait an additional 72 hours to vote on those two issues.

State Board of Education member David Bradley has already contacted the Texas Attorney General and the commissioner of education about this matter asking them to intervene.

Sources also tell 12News that local authorities have been contacted as well about this possible violation of state law.

Two weeks ago, Jefferson County District Attorney Cory Crenshaw warned the board not to vote on proposed layoff of teachers, because it had not been properly posted on the agenda.

Monday's board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the district's administration building.
