Big Thicket National Preserve Prohibits the Use of Unmanned Aircraft

Posted:
A spokesperson for the Big Thicket National Preserve Thursday announced that use of drones will be prohibited inside the preserve.

Acting Superintendent Merrick Moody said the new rules will prohibit the launching, operation, and landing of unmanned aircraft from or on lands and waters administered by the National Park Service within the boundaries of the Big Thicket National Preserve except as approved in writing by the Superintendent.

“The Preserve was created to preserve, conserve, and protect a significant portion of Southeast Texas.  The launching, operation, and landing of unmanned aircraft within the boundaries of the Preserve have been determined to be detrimental to the values for which the Preserve was established as well as to the health and safety of those who visit the Preserve,” said Moody.

The prohibition includes use of model airplanes, quad copters, and drones.
