DPS says at least 6 people injured in collision

Posted: Updated:
The Department of Public Safety says at least six people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Sunday morning on Highway 73.

Troopers say  the preliminary crash investigation indicates that a 2000 Ford F350, driven by Michael Lloyd Bell, 42,  from La Porte, was eastbound on SH 73 when the front left tire of the vehicle had a blowout causing the vehicle to skid through the grassy median. Troopers say the truck entered the westbound lanes of SH 73 where it was struck by a 2012 Ford Explorer driven by Dustin Bailey Vurnham, 24, from Port Arthur.

Troopers say Bell was not injured in the collision, but three of his four passengers were taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and one was flown to UTMB in Galveston for treatment. Vurnham was taken to a local hospital for treatment and one of his two passengers was flown to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.

Mr. Bell was cited with a child safety seat violation. Mr. Vurnham was cited for driving while license suspended.

The crash remains under investigation.

Earlier reports to 12News indicated that at least nine people were injured including three children.
