Beaumont ISD set to vote to combine two middle schools

12News has confirmed that Beaumont Independent School District trustees are set to vote to combine Austin Middle School into MLK Middle School.

The Paul Brown Center and Pathways Center would then be served at the current Austin Middle School. A district spokesperson said it costs about $1.4 million a year to operate Austin.

12News broke the story weeks ago that combining the two schools was being considered as an option.

The move is part of a cost cutting measure as officials try to reduce a $25 million budget shortfall. The district is also considering cutting as many as 300 jobs.
