Community gathers to remember former Beaumont mayor Maury Meyers

Well over 100 people gathered at Temple Emanuel in Beaumont Thursday to pay their respects to Maury Meyers, who passed away Sunday at the age of 82 following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

For the man who served four terms as mayor of Beaumont, from 1978-1982 and again from 1986-1990, the large crowd was a testament to his impact on the community.

"I couldn't be prouder, and I know that he's looking down and I know that he's smiling, and that makes me very happy," said Meyers' oldest daughter Ellen Polansky.

Rabbi Joshua Taub opened the service with a prayer, and had high words of praise for Meyers.

"There is such admiration for Maury Meyers in this community, that I'm sure some believe the man could actually walk on water," said Taub.

Meyers' longtime friend Bill Hartman gave a heartfelt eulogy filled with humor and adoration.

"(Maury was) one of the most dynamic men in Southeast Texas history. He epitomized the word 'integrity'," Hartman said.

Perhaps the most touching moment was when Meyers' second oldest daughter, Peggy Hardy, read the crowd a letter she had written her dad about 8 weeks ago.

"Parkinson's can never take away the love you have for mom, or the love she has for you... Parkinson's can never take away the fun we had on family vacations," she read.
