One dead in Houston apartment fire

Posted:
HOUSTON - KTRK-- Firefighters say one person has been found dead after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment complex in northwest Houston.

The fire broke out shortly before 2:45pm at the West Vintage Apartments, located at 6500 W. 43rd Street near the Northwest Freeway. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a two-story apartment building.

An Eyewitness News viewer captured video of the flames from his cellphone in the minutes before firefighters arrived.
A total of 16 units were damaged or destroyed by heavy smoke and fire. We're told the building was occupied but we don't yet know how many families have been displaced. The American Red Cross has been notified to help.

Firefighters found the body of a deceased adult after conducting a secondary search at the apartment complex.

There are also reports of an explosion before the flames broke out. Arson investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire since there is no gas coming into the apartment complex.
