BISD meeting canceled after DA tells trustees to delay job cuts vote

Posted:
Jefferson County District Attorney Corey Crenshaw Thursday told the Beaumont Independent School District board of trustees to delay voting on the proposed layoff list until proper notice is given and 72 hours has passed.  This is required by law anytime a change has been made to the school district's agenda.

Earlier this week, the DA told the board it could not discuss the job cuts in an executive session. The board complied, however never made the change on the original agenda.

"We believe it is in the best interest of the community for the school board to be in compliance with the laws of the State of Texas.  We reserve the right to further investigate this matter and to bring appropriate action as necessary to insure all actions taken are in compliance," said Crenshaw.

School Board trustee Woodrow Reece told 12News that BISD will hold a meeting Thursday evening, but the vote on the reduction in force will not take place.  The actual vote will be postponed until Monday at 6 p.m.

District officials early Thursday afternoon originally decided to continue with all school business except for a vote on the reduction in force.  Late Thursday afternoon district officials changed that decision and announced that all school business set to take place Thursday night would be canceled and no meeting would take place.
