One confirmed dead after car goes into canal in Port Neches

One person is confirmed dead following an accident involving a car in a canal in Port Neches.

The accident was reported around 1 p.m. Thursday at the LNVA canal near Highway 366 and Orchard Avenue.

Port Neches Police Chief Paul Lemoine told 12News that Pipeline workers walking along the canal bank spotted the roof of a submerged vehicle.

Police officers called for fire department divers who found and retrieved the victim's body.  Officials have only identified the victim as a female. Chief Paul Lemoine told 12News at 5:30 p.m. that the family has not yet been notified and the body will not be positively identified until an autopsy is complete.

A news release issued by the Police Department says investigators at the scene believe that sometime during the night the vehicle was traveling northbound on Hwy 366, near Orchard Ave., failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, crossed the railroad tracks and entered the LNVA canal.

Jefferson County Precinct 7 Justice of the Peace Judge Brad Burnet has ordered an autopsy.
