Quanell X calls on Chargois to resign

The former Beaumont Independent School district assistant director of finance and purchasing held a news conference Wednesday along with activist Quanell X. This was the first time that Naomi Lawrence-Lee has spoken publicly since she was terminated from her position at the district.

X, who calls himself the leader of the New Black Panther party, has been quoted saying that some of the investigations into BISD are a "witch hunt" against African Americans. However, during the news conference, X called for the resignation of BISD Superintendent Timothy Chargois, Ed.D.

"As a young African American leader I have to say that the Beaumont superintendent has to go," X said.

Lawrence-Lee, who was placed on paid leave in January and fired in April, spoke briefly about the investigations against her.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their prayers and certainly as a godly woman of integrity I'd like to just ask that you continue to pray for me and my family as we endure this storm were in and thank you," Lawrence-Lee said.

Sources within the district said Lawrence-Lee neglected to pay thousands of dollars to a vender even though she was paid extra to do so.

In the past X has been accused of charging for his appearances, but when asked if he was paid to come to Beaumont he said he came here on his own dime.

"You white folks don't pay me so I can say whatever I want to say when it needs to be said," X said.

Things got heated when one woman spoke up about his reference of "white folks." However, many in the crowd, including BISD Trustee Mike Neil agreed with most of what he had to say.

"It's hurting the children and the people doing the harm are the ones in charge," Neil said. "I was surprised to hear him say that and I didn't think that was going to come today."

X said he thinks a new board of managers should be comprised of three white trustees, three black and one Hispanic until a new board is voted in.
