Out of district transfer increase in Jefferson County

Posted:
JEFFERSON COUNTY -

Parents seeking to have their children leave the struggling Beaumont Independent School District may face some difficulties.

Out-of-district enrollment is up 33 percent at Hardin Jefferson ISD with most of the students coming from BISD. HJISD superintendent Shannon Holmes said the district can only accept 50 students among its 12 grades and four campuses.

There is also a strict application process, according to Holmes only those students who meet the highest criteria in terms of academics and discipline will be accepted and the $1,000 per year tuition will stay the same.

The tuition cost is about how much home owners in the district pay in local taxes. Holmes said it's designed to make things fair and is not a money maker for HJISD.

However, the added cost and limited space has left parents like Janie Perry searching for other solutions.

"I don't think there's going to be a rapid turnaround for the damage that's been done,” she said. “It's going to take some time for emotions to heal and attitudes to be corrected."

Holmes said the district doesn't plan to hire anymore teachers just to cover transfer student.
