District Attorney warns BISD to keep jobs meeting open to the public, Texas Rangers to attend meeting

12News has learned that Beaumont Independent School District officials are considering holding Thursday night's discussion of a potential reduction in force in a an executive session closed to the public. 

12News has also learned that the Jefferson County District Attorney is telling school officials that such a meeting would be in violation the Texas Government Code and that there are potential criminal repercussions.

Jefferson County District Attorney Cory Crenshaw sent a letter to the Superintendent and to board members saying that there will be Texas Rangers at the meeting to arrest anyone who violates state law.

"If the matters at issue are undertaken as part of a closed meeting and in violation of the statue, this office is prepared to prosecute these violations to the fullest extend of the law.  Law enforcement personnel have been notified of the potential violations, " said Crenshaw in the letter.

Crenshaw said a school official convicted of violating the Open Meetings Act faces up to 6 months in jail.
