Elderly woman killed in suspicious house fire identified

Posted: Updated:
A fire investigator said a blaze that claimed the life of an elderly woman appears to be suspicious.

A news release issued by The Orange County Sheriff's Office Sunday identifies the victim as Dorothy Hampshire, 79, of Vidor.

Firefighters were called to the home located on the 3200 block of S. Main in Vidor early Sunday morning.  The Sheriff's Office news release says  four people managed to escape the burning home. Family members tried to save Hampshire, but the smoke was overpowering and they were unable to reach her.

The Sheriff's Office spokesperson said deputies are actively looking for a person of interest in the case and that more details would be released as the investigation progresses.
