Jury still out on capital murder verdict

Posted:
BEAUMONT -

A jury of eight men and four women began deliberations around 2 p.m. Wednesday in Gregory George’s capital murder trial but were not able to reach a verdict.

In closing arguments the defense argued the blame for Morales’ murder could be placed on a man who matched the descriptions Morales' wife Rosa and friend Jose Sanchez gave in their testimony.

The only person called to testify on day two of testimony was expert witness Brian McVicker, an FBI forensic footwear and tire examiner.

McVicker testified that the footprints found at the crime scene did not belong to the man the defense said could have been the man responsible for the shooting death of Morales.

Gregory George’s aunt said she felt like prosecutors were only looking for a conviction, not justice. She also said she feels for the Morales family and knows they just want answers.

“As a family we’re all sorry for their loss knowing they've suffered, the kids have suffered,” she said. “We know all they want is the truth and they deserve the truth.”

Davis also said she thinks the reason it’s taken three years for this case to go to trial is due to the fact that district attorneys did not have enough hard evidence to convict George.

Jury deliberations will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Judge John Steven’s court.
