Students gather in support of teachers prior to BISD vote for teacher layoffs

Students from the Beaumont Independent School District Monday protested outside of district offices as the Board of Trustees prepared to vote to cut over 230 positions within the district.

Trustees are facing a $25 million budget shortfall next school year and Superintendent Timothy Chargois has proposed cutting over 230 positions, many of which are in the district's fine arts programs.

After a vote of 6-1 was cast to postpone the proposed layoffs, students, parents, and teachers cheered outside the administration building.

A majority of students rallying for their teachers were from Beaumont I.S.D.'s Fine Arts department. During the board meeting students gathered outside the administration building and began chanting so loud trustees were barely audible.

Many students at the rally were involved in Choir, Band, Drama, Drill Team or Cheer squads. Some students in attendance were not involved in any extracurricular activities and showed up simply to support their peers.
