Community reacts to BISD job cuts list

BEAUMONT - As friends and family honored Beaumont ISD's graduating high school seniors Saturday, the impending mass layoffs of school district employees was still fresh in people's minds.

"I feel like it's ridiculous, I feel like the district needs to get it together, there's people that need to feed their families," said former Ozen High School student Jordan Spradley.

Friday 12News received a list of job cuts proposed by superintendent Timothy Chargois to deal with the district's financial emergency,
There are no names, but it lists 239 positions in total, primarily teachers, at every elementary, middle and high school in the district.

"It's going to make the classes bigger, less teachers around, it's going to make things a lot harder for us," said current Ozen High School student Brandee Williams.
Beaumont Teachers' Association vice president Sebrina Dollar says the cuts will impact more than just the city of Beaumont.

"Not all of the teachers live in Beaumont, they also live in surrounding communities, that also has a trickle down effect," Dollar said.

The district has scheduled a job fair June 24 for those affected by the layoffs.

"It's a sad situation. However, I'm pretty sure BISD will get through this," said Chrystal Rawls, who was 3 children in BISD schools.

Chargois says he is open to the idea of cutting salaries across the entire district by 3-5%. Chargois said employees should know if they have been proposed for termination by June 17.  The board of trustees will vote on the proposals June 19.
