Students begin summer job hunt

BEAUMONT - School is out, summer break is here, and for Central High School student Jakalynn Coleman, that means it's time to get a job.

"It'd be great because I'll have my own money. My mom's working, so I won't have to ask her for money," Coleman said.

Some students say landing that summer gig isn't always easy.

"I think it's pretty hard. I've been putting in applications and haven't been getting any calls," said Coleman's friend Marulas Raymo said.

"Everytime you go apply, if you get a no just keep going because you'll eventually get a yes," recommends Dana Willis with Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas.

Willis says they offer a number of services for young people looking for work.

"We do offer some workshops on interviewing techniques, how to use our system to find a job," said Willis.

She says call centers are looking to fill summer positions.

"We've also had a contractor for janitorial services that were for the summer months," she said.

Coleman says he plans to focus on fast food chains and grocery stores to earn some extra cash, but says having a job is about more than just filling an empty wallet.

"It builds great character... and makes you feel grown up sometimes," he said.

Getting a job may be more difficult for students this summer. Willis says they have not yet seen as big of an increase in employers hiring for summer positions as they have in years past.
