Bumpers named Louisville Slugger All-American

Senior is the first Cardinal to earn the designation since 2005

BEAUMONT – For the first time since 2005, the Lamar baseball team can boast of an All-American as Sam Bumpers was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team by Collegiate Baseball.

A senior shortstop out of Bourbonnais, Ill., Bumpers was a force to be reckoned with in Southland play this season, posting a league-best .427 average in conference games and ending with a .361 mark overall to take home the Southland Hitter of the Year award. He was LU’s leading power source as well, leading the team in doubles (17), triples (4) and home runs (6) while knocking in 37 runs and scoring 45 times.

Bumpers was the only player from the Southland Conference to earn a spot on the team.

This actually marks the second time this season that Bumpers has captured national headlines as he took home Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after a weekend that featured a 7-for-7 outing with three homers in a win over rival McNeese State.

Bumpers is the third-ever Card to earn Louisville Slugger All-America honors, joining Jordan Foster in 2003 and Kyle Stutes in 2004. Eric Cammack (1997) and Michael Ambort (2005) are the only other two players to earn the national designation from other publications.
