13 dogs seized, owner faces possible dog fighting and drug charges

Posted:
Beaumont Police officers, agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration and officers with Beaumont Animal Services Thursday were called to a home on Buffalo Avenue near El Paso Avenue in the city's north end.  Federal agents originally went to the house to serve a drug warrant, but what they found inside the home could lead to charges related to dog fighting.

Animal control officers used two trucks to remove dogs and a litter puppies from the house.  In all, 13 dogs were taken from the property.

"Several of them had wounds that are consistent with fighting and they will be examined by our veterinarian today," said Beaumont Animal Services Supervisor Matthew Fortenberry."

Fortenberry said Beaumont Animal Services received a call that the DEA had served a search warrant at the house.  While agents were serving the warrant, they noticed fighting paraphernalia at the house.

"We found different things such as a treadmill, bite sticks, dogs with fighting scars, just different things that lead us to believe there was fighting," said Fortenberry.

Fortenberry said the dogs were all kept on heavy chains, including the small puppies.  The dogs could not reach each other. Some were stuck in areas that had constantly wet ground.

A seizure hearing will be scheduled to determine if the dogs can be adopted out or if they will be returned to the owner.  A date for the hearing has not yet been set.

One person from the house was taken into custody.  Investigators are considering drug charges as well as cruelty to animal charges.  Officers on the scene could not yet say the exact charges because the investigation is ongoing.
