Port Arthur store to close doors after 101 years in business

PORT ARTHUR - Printed proudly on its sign, Stoneburner Electric has been a fixture in Port Arthur since 1913. But after 101 years in business, it will be no more.

"The business has been here for a long time, it's been a staple down here in this neighborhood so i hate to see them leaving," said customer Greg Jackson.
After dealing with a series of personal issues, owner Steve Verret decided it was time to say goodbye to the company his grandfather bought from Frank Stoneburner in 1950.

"Our family motto has always been 'We can fix everything but a broken heart, and we're working on that'," said Verret.

Now known as Stoneburner Verret Electric Inc., the electrical contracting company with a wholesale store on Procter Street will close forever June 13. Verret says the store once boasted the largest lighting showroom from Baton Rouge to Houston.
"The store was known that if you can't find it somewhere, go to Stoneburner's because they have everything," said Verret.

Longtime employee Cecile Dozier says June 13 will be a tough day.

"It will be hard... it was a job where you had a family that would take care of your family," said Dozier.

"I'll miss the camaraderie of our family of employees. I'll miss being able to serve those who come through that front door everyday that just were looking for a hug, a part that you couldn't find, or somebody that had a fresh ear to talk to," said Verret.

Verret says the building has been purchased by Lamar State College - Port Arthur.
