Smith Middle School hosts BISD Block Party during uncertain times

BEAUMONT - The rainy weather Saturday afternoon did not hamper people from attending the third annual North Beaumont Super Staars Block Party at Willie Ray Smith Middle School.
The event is put on largely with the help of the community and is focused on showcasing talents of north Beaumont students, but was open to everyone.

It marked a time of joy for a school district in the middle of a crisis.

The party came just two days after the school district's financial consultant recommended $32 million in spending cuts and the board of trustees declared a financial emergency. Hundreds of teachers and staff are facing an uncertain future of potential mass layoffs.

"We can't let what's happening affect our children, we need to still come out and fellowship and have a good time," said parent Trazarra Stelly.

Beaumont Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois said the school district did chip in a small amount of money to help make the event possible.

"Even though these are difficult times financially, it's extremely important that we take care of the kids, and there is nothing better than celebrating the success of students. And so when you bring people together, we know it may cost something, but when it's about the success of our students... hey man, some things are just worth it," Chargois told 12News Saturday.

Chargois said he did not know how much money the district spent on Saturday's block party, but said the main cost was covering overtime pay for some employees working the event, such as maintenance workers and a police officer.
