Beaumont Police Department releases 2013 "Year in Review"

BEAUMONT - Beaumont police are providing the community with a closer look at crime in our area. In its annual "Year in Review" report released Friday, violent crime rates over the past three years are compared side-by-side.
For the most part, violent crimes are up slightly since 2011, but the differences between the past two years are less noticeable.
Beaumont saw 17 murders in 2013, four more than in 2012.

"Some of that was due to the unfortunate triple homicide that we had," said Beaumont police Captain Jim Clay.

Clay says it's common for crime to fluctuate from year to year, and many are difficult to prevent. For example, Beaumont had 59 cases of rape in 2013, down from 76 in 2012. There were 418 robberies in 2013, ten more than than in 2012. There were 730 aggravated assaults in 2013 compared to 745 in 2012.

"We want to see significant decreases, and the more we work with the community we can accomplish that, we can't do it on our own," said Clay.

Police have been successful in their investigations of these crimes, however, boasting a high clearance rate, solving 69% of violent crimes in 2013 compared to the national average of 46%.
"A lot of it is because the victims do cooperate with us, witnesses do come forward," said Clay.

There was a 6% increase in property crimes, like burglaries and thefts, in 2013 compared to 2012, but numbers from both of those years are down compared to 2011.
