Silsbee ISD reveals designs for new elementary school bond project

SILSBEE - The designs are in for the new Silsbee Elementary School.  It will be a two-story, roughly 126,000 sq. ft. building.

The new school, a project made possible when voters approved a $29.9 million bond proposal in November, will be built between Read-Turrentine Elementary School and Laura Reeves Elementary School.

"We are crossing our fingers and hoping the timeline they put forth will hold, and if it holds, and weather permits, we will open the doors in August 2015," said Silsbee ISD Superintendent Richard Bain.

Bain said the school will have state of the art technology in all classrooms among other unique features.
"One of the things that we're real excited about is how open it's going to be, allowing for (lots of) exterior light," said Bain.

Under the bond proposal, Read-Turrentine and John H. Kirby Elementary, both pushing 60 years old, will be demolished after the new school is built.

"These buildings were built before air conditioning, so they were retrofitted... they leak... there's no air conditioning in the hallways... which also means they don't have the air flow that's necessary for good air quality. So you're looking at all these students moving into a building where the air quality will be much much better for them," said Bain.

The new school will serve grades 1-5. Laura Reeves will be converted into a pre-k and kindergarten campus only, and thanks to the bond proposal, will get more than a million dollars in renovations.

Edwards-Johnson Memorial Middle School will also receive roughly $3 million in renovations that are expected to be completed summer 2015.
