With BISD layoffs looming, other districts in need of teachers

Posted:
The Beaumont Independent School District is expected to have more information on the 300 layoffs announced last week during a budget board meeting scheduled for Thursday night.  Most of the employees concerned and speaking out about the layoffs are BISD teachers.

But as the layoffs become final by June 12, other area school districts need to fill vacancies.

Leading the pack is Port Arthur I.S.D. where more than 40 teacher vacancies need to be filled. A district spokesperson said PAISD recently processed retirements and resignations which is the cause for the high number.

"As with any school district we want to begin the school year with a fill rate of 100 percent. And we're working toward that end," Human Resources Director Jimmy Wyble said.

Other area school districts with double digit vacancies include West Orange-Cove C.I.S.D. at more than 20 vacancies, Jasper I.S.D. with 17, and Little Cypress-Mauriceville C.I.S.D. with 11.

The vacancies at PAISD range from core subjects to extra curricular activities. Wyble suggest applicants to the district schedule appointments with campus administration to better their chances of being hired.

Area school districts also have openings for transportation and maintenance positions which have been noted as other positions that will be laid off within BISD.
