Gators, snakes and wet weather

BEAUMONT -

The rain is a welcome sight in Southeast Texas.  But with it comes an increase of critters within city limits.

A seven foot alligator caused a scene Wednesday as it was captured by Beaumont Animal Services near 11th St. and Washington Avenue.

Moral Hampton pulled over to see what all the fuss was about.

“Well it was doing the death roll, spinning and making a little hissing noise like a snake,” Hampton said.

Snakes have also been a problem in the area, on May 22 officers relocated a six foot rat snake that had slithered into someone's car outside The Southeast Texas Medical Associates Medical Center on College Street in Beaumont.

Beaumont Animal Services Supervisor Matthew Fortenberry told 12News the reason is a combination of a longer winter and spring showers.

“This time of year the reptiles come out,” Fortenberry said.

“The water’s warming up, the air temperature is warm and you'll see alligators, snakes and animals coming out to get some of the warm air.”

The alligator was released shortly after its capture, at Tyrrell Park, but Fortenberry said park goers should not be alarmed since the area of the bayou is a safe distance away from the public and is already home to lots of gators.
