The Department of Public Safety and other emergency agencies worked a major accident on Highway 124 at the intersection with Martine Road in Hamshire Wednesday morning.
The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. It was originally called in to dispatch as a head-on collision, but once first responders arrived on scene they found that a tan 2002 Honda passenger car and a blue 2012 extended-cab Dodge pickup were both heading northbound on Hwy 124 in Hamshire. The truck was in front of the car.
The driver of the truck, identified as Sheryl Matthews, 47, of Hamshire, slowed down to make a left turn on Martine Road. While the truck was turning, the Honda slammed into the back of the truck.
The driver of the Honda, identified as Dane Shellhammer, 36, of Hamshire, had to be cut out of the car.
A news release issued by the DPS Wednesday afternoon says Shellhammer was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont with minor injuries. Shellhammer's child, 3, was secured in a seatbelt only in the back seat of the Honda. The child was not injured in the collision.
Shellhammer was cited for Failure to Control Speed and Child under 8-years-old not secured by safety seat system.
The roadway was closed while crews worked to clear the accident site.
