Pit bulls that attacked man with down syndrome deemed a danger, face euthanization

Posted:
It will up to be the owner of two pit bulls whether the animals will be euthanized after they were deemed dangerous animals by Beaumont Animal Services. The two dogs, along with a third of the same breed, attacked 47-year-old Jeffrey Carnley on the morning of April 25.

Carnley, who has down syndrome, was walking his dog in the 1200 block of North Major Drive when the attack happened. Carnley's pet Schnauzer was killed in the attack. Witnesses said the the pit bulls clamped on Carnley's right arm and took him to the ground.

A spokesperson for Beaumont Animal Services said an investigation determined the dogs were not provoked. The owner of the dogs has been notified that he has until Friday to decide whether he will keep the dogs under strict guidelines or not. However, the spokesperson said it has yet to hear from the owner.

"The owner has failed to return our message we left at his residence which tells us he may not want to take responsibility for his animals," Division Supervisor Matt Fortenberry said.

Family and neighbors of Carnley no longer have to fear whether the animals will return to the neighborhood. 12News learned Tuesday the man has since moved. Neighbors said the man broke the terms of his lease by owning the pit bulls.

Carnley remains in the hospital. The third pit bull has yet to be found.
