Colonnade Shopping Center re-opens after awning collapse, shop owners deal with aftereffects

Posted: Updated:

The Colonnade Shopping center located at 6250 Phelan Blvd. in West Beaumont has re-opened after a facade that was being renovated partially collapsed Thursday.

One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries when the incident happened.

The collapse forced the closure of 11 shops in the center.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, but business owners in the shopping center are now forced to deal with the collapse's effects, which some say have not been good for business.

Some shop owners tell us because business signs were knocked down and destroyed in the collapse, it gives the appearance that the shops are closed for construction, or that they aren't there at all.

Employees at a nail salon say this is especially worrisome to them because this weekend is Mother's Day, they say one of their busiest days of the year.

One shop owner tells us he thinks structural engineers are supposed to come and see if they can figure out what went wrong.
