A Liberty County man is facing cruelty to livestock animal charges.

A spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to 911 call from someone saying they witnessed a man dragging a small black and white shetland pony behind his red pickup truck just outside of Dayton.

The witness said that each time the little horse stumbled and fell on the road's surface, the owner would get out and beat the small horse across the head with a belt buckle.

Deputies found the pony and its owner Francisco Cruz, 68, just outside Dayton.

Most of the hair and skin on the pony had been dragged off.

A hearing is set for May 13 to determine if the pony should return to Cruz or remain in the custody of the Houston Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals.
