Ceremony held in Beaumont Wednesday honors fallen officers

BEAUMONT - The Beaumont Police Department Wednesday hosted the 2014 Southeast Texas Police Memorial Ceremony.   The event was held at the police memorial located in front of the Beaumont Police Department.

During the ceremony, officers paid homage to local officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and paid respect to the surviving family members of those fallen officers.

Over forty family members representing eleven fallen officers from five different regional law enforcement agencies attended the ceremony.  Each family member had an active role in the ceremony by placing a rose in a memorial wreath during the service.

Cory Crenshaw, Jefferson County District Attorney, served as the keynote speaker.  The Beaumont Police Department Honor Guard and Rifle Team rendered military honors, a twenty-gun salute and the playing of Taps, during the ceremony.

The ceremony is one of thousands that took place across the nation in recognition of National Police Week.  In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week.
