Politicians talk about marijuana legalization

Posted:
Marijuana legalization in Texas. Some Texans would never imagine the idea, but it was the topic of an open forum in Beaumont Monday night.

The event, called Talk 2 Your Politician, was a chance for politicians to tell people their thoughts on legalization. Only three out of a list of 10 people who were supposed to participate on a panel showed up.

David Smith is seeking election to the US Senate as an Independent.  Don Brown is a Democrat running for US Congress.  Both spoke in favor of full legalization of marijuana.

Gavin Bruney is a Democrat running for District 21 State Representative.  He spoke in favor of decriminalization. Bruney said legalization is an issue that should be approached slowly and with care. The Southeast Texas chapter of the National Organization for Reforming Marijuana Laws put on the forum.

District 22 House Representative Joe Deshotel did not show up. 12News was told an aide was supposed to show up in his place but did not.

Republican candidate for 252nd District Court Judge Carolyn Wiedenfeld was on the list but did not show up. Thomas Sigee, who has expressed interest in running for Jefferson County Tax Assessor-Collector, did not show up even though he did RSVP according to SETX Norml.

Michael Cole, Democratic candidate for the 36th Congressional District also did not make it, but used Skype to answer questions from the crowd.
