Man dragged 80 feet in auto-pedestrian accident

Police in Port Arthur are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident.

A police spokesperson said a truck hit the man at about 5 a.m. Monday in the 6000 block of Gulfway Drive.  This is near the intersection with Main Street.

An officer on the scene said the victim was dragged about 80 feet.

The victim has been identified as Brian Chase, 35, of Rhode Island.

Chase was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Precinct 7 Judge Brad Burnett.

A spokesperson for the Department of Public safety said due to the unusual circumstances of the accident, the DPS will wait until it has autopsy results for Brian Chase before saying anything about his physical condition prior to the crash.  Trooper Stephanie Davis said the autopsy should provide toxicology information as well and will be back in two to three weeks.
