Man hospitalized, Schnauzer dead after three pit bulls attack

BEAUMONT - A 47-year-old Beaumont man is recovering at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth after being attacked by three pit bulls.

Beaumont Animal Services has confirmed that Jeffry Carnley was attacked last Friday.

Carnley's mother said around 8 a.m. he was taking his Schnauzer out for a morning walk in the 1200 block of North Major Drive when he and his dog was attacked.

Roland Brockman is a neighbor.  He said he was in his garage when he heard a commotion across the street.  Brockman said he saw one of the pit bulls grab Carnley by his arm then pull him to the ground like a rag doll.

Other neighbors ran to help.

One of the neighbors began beating the dogs, another told Brockman to get a water hose and spray them.  To his surprise, the dogs scattered when he sprayed them.

Brockman said Carnley was covered in blood when he was taken to the hospital.

Carnley's family said he will be in the hospital for at least three more weeks.  His Schnauzer was killed in the attack.

Beaumont Animal Services has two of the pit bulls in quarantine while officers are investigating the incident.  The third pit bull has not yet been captured.

An officer with the department is reviewing the animals to determine if the attack was unprovoked.  The owner will have to follow guidelines to keep the animals if the dogs are deemed dangerous.  The owner would have to get $100,000 liability insurance on each dog. He would also have to keep them in a cage and keep them muzzled when outside of that enclosure.

A spokesperson for Beaumont Animal Services said the liability insurance is often too much for owners to handle. If the owner chooses not to follow the guidelines, then the dogs must be put down.
