Reported threat leads to heightened security at West Orange-Stark High School

Posted: Updated:
WEST ORANGE - Extra police officers were at West Orange-Stark High School Wednesday... a precaution put in place by the school district in response to a threat reportedly made by a student Tuesday.

West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent James Colbert Jr. says two students got in a fight at the school Tuesday, and that one made a threat while being escorted off campus. Students say the student threatened to take a gun to school.

Parents were notified about the threat via an automated phone call around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. They were also told extra security would be in place Wednesday.

A man claiming to be the father of the student who reportedly made the threat called our newsroom Wednesday afternoon and told us that his son was the victim of a vicious attack at the hands of two other students, and that no threat was made.

"Nothing was ever said as we were leaving the building at all... and the officer was walking right along with us said he never heard anything from me or my child," said the father who wanted to remain anonymous.

After speaking to the father, 12News contacted a spokesperson with the school district to ask about the conflicting information regarding the threat. The spokesperson relayed our request to the superintendent and as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday have not heard back.

One student we spoke to said he stayed home from school Wednesday because he was scared for his safety, and that other students he knows did the same.

Colbert says the students involved in the fight have been disciplined. The father who called us says his son was suspended for three days and placed in alternative learning for the rest of the year.
