BISD head of special education to retire and end of the year

12News has learned that the Beaumont Independent School District's head of special education Dr. Susan Alfred-Barefield has notified the district that she will retire effective the end of the school year.

The Texas Education Agency's investigation into BISD's special education department was the first investigation completed by TEA investigators.  It led to the state agency  appointing a monitor over special ed.

That appointment took place in February.

The items highlighted by investigators are related to the No Child Left Behind Act.

They involve teacher qualifications, notification to parents of issues pertaining to teacher qualifications and having adequate staff numbers.

Earlier this month, the special ed monitor's role was expanded to the role of a conservator.

The conservator will oversee the operations of the district and ensure the district is taking appropriate measures until a board of managers is in place.

This is a developing story.  Check back for updates.
