Driver of pickup cited in accident that caused a log truck to flip, block traffic

Posted:
HARDIN COUNTY - Highway 96 just south of the Hardin/Jasper line has reopened after being closed for hours following an accident involving a log truck Friday morning.

The accident happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Highway 96 about 2 miles from the county line.

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said the driver of a Ford F250 truck was traveling northbound in the inside (fast) lane of Highway 96.  The driver of the Ford truck was traveling at a high rate of speed as he approached two slower moving vehicles.  To avoid striking the slower moving vehicles, the driver of the Ford truck slammed on his brakes which caused the vehicle to go into the center median.  Trooper Stephanie Davis said at this point the driver jerked the wheel  to the right which caused the vehicle to go back across the northbound lanes of Highway 96 in front of a Freightliner truck tractor loaded with logs.  The driver of the log truck steered to the right to avoid colliding with the Ford truck; however, the collision was unavoidable.  The driver of the log truck collided with the Ford truck and the load shifted which caused the log truck to rollover.

The driver of the log truck, Eric Adams, 43, of Jasper, was taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth for observation.

The driver of the Ford truck, Ethan Caraway, 16, of Silsbee, was not injured in the accident.  He was cited for Failure to Control Speed.

The northbound lanes of Highway 96 were closed until the crash scene was clear of debris.  All lanes of Highway 96 re-opened at 10:30 a.m.
