Teen struggles to recover while mourning mother's death after Easter crash

Posted: Updated:
ORANGE - The young survivor of an Easter motorcycle accident continues to cling to life as she grieves the death of her mother.

Emergency workers on the scene said that Jessica Twiner, 14 and her mom, Ramona Tolman, 44, both of Mauriceville, were on a three-wheeled motorcycle when they ran off the road and hit a fence and tree. Tolman was pronounced dead on the scene. Jessica was taken by medical helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where she remains in critical but stable condition.

Jessica has a punctured lung, ripped bladder, a hole in her kidney, her pelvis is completely crushed and she has no feeling in her left leg from the knee down. However her aunt, Michelle Twiner, said she's completely alert, aware and is much more concerned about everyone else. She said Jessica even called the school to wish her classmates good luck on their tests.

Not only is the young teen dealing with critical injuries and the death of her mom, Twiner said that 10 years ago, Jessica’s dad died in an accident on the exact same stretch of road.

Jessica is a proud tuba player for the Mauriceville Middle School band. Her band mates and band director, Kathy Smith, have gathered cards, balloons and donations that they plan to deliver to her in person.

"She's a very strong person so I know she'll come through this,” Smith said. “It won't be easy, she has a long road ahead but we just want her to know we're here and we'll always be here."

Funeral arrangements for Ramona Tolman will be held Sat. April 26 at 2 p.m. at Deweyville United Pentecostal Church. Family members plan to tape the service so that Jessica can watch it.
