Newton police investigate apparent murder-suicide

The Newton Police Department is investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

Sgt. Givien Kelley with the Newton Police Department told 12News that Donald Powell, 66, shot and killed his mother Pauline Powell, 88, with a .38 revolver.  He said the shooting happened in Pauline Powell's house on Fair Park Street around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Kelley said  Donald Powell then called his son in Arlington to tell him what he did.  He said Mr. Powell told his son he was considering killing himself.  His son called police to alert them and by the time they arrived, they found both dead in the home.

Kelley says it appears Donald Powell suffered from schizophrenia.
