BISD school board votes to appeal state takeover by the TEA

Posted: Updated:

The Beaumont Independent School District will fight the takeover by the Texas Education Agency. Trustees Thursday night voted 5-2 to appeal the appointment of a conservator and board of managers.

The two votes against making an appeal came from trustees Tom Neild and Mike Neil.

During a special meeting board members went into executive session for about 30 minutes before voting on the appeal.

Trustee Janice Brassard said the takeover is nothing but a political move and does no good for the students. Trustee Woodrow Reece says a takeover is outlandish and the death penalty.

Trustees Terry Williams and Board President Gwen Ambres did not state their position on the appeal but it was clear once they voted with the board majority.

Two sources also confirmed Thursday night that Ann Westbrooks has now decided against accepting the position with BISD as Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller.

She was hired to replace Sharika Allison and Devin McCraney who pleaded guilty to embezzling $4 million dollars from the district.
