Bar re-opens under new owners after closing due to TABC violations

Posted: Updated:

New owners have taken over a popular Beaumont bar that has been in trouble recently with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

The West Bar and Grill closed November 2013.

The business was cited for multiple violations by the TABC including two violations for serving a minor. The minor was 19-year-old Sarah Comstock of Lumberton.

According to a TABC investigation employees of the West served Comstock despite knowing her age back in February of 2013. She later died from injuries suffered in an accident while driving home intoxicated according to the TABC.

Her parents sued the West but 12News has learned the business agreed to a settlement.

Former state representative Mike Hamilton and Jeff McCarson have taken over ownership of the bar. Its first night open was Monday.

"The law is pretty clear. After nine o'clock they allow 21 years and older, usually have someone checking earlier. They're going to have to have ID on them and it's going to have to be a good ID," Hamilton said.

As part of the agreement the former owners can not comment on the settlement.

The Comstock's are still taking other parties they believe are at fault for the death of their daughter to court.
