BISD school board to vote on possible appeal of TEA takeover

BEAUMONT -

The Beaumont Independent School District Board of trustees is set to vote on an agenda item that would essentially appeal the Texas Education Agency's decision to take control of the district.

An item on Thursday's agenda says trustees will consider a measure to, "Authorize the Attorney to Appeal TEA's Appointment of a Conservator and Board of Managers."

The measure would request a record review by the TEA in which the superintendent and president of the Board of Trustees would go to Austin to appear before the commissioner and make one last case to reconsider his recommendation. .

12Nnews Tuesday asked some of the board members to give their thoughts on a potential appeal.

"We have gone through the process, and we do not need to spend any more of the tax payer's dollars," said District 6 trustee Tom Neild.

Neild said if any board members wish to appeal, they should do so using their own funds and not at the expense of the taxpayers.

"As far as the district as a whole - no not interested," said Neild.

District 2 Trustee Zenobia Bush had a different opinion on the matter.

"The verdict that has been given is not a just one. I think what the commissioner did was take an extreme stance. If anything he could have brought a conservator in, but to bring a board of managers in as well was too extreme," said Bush.

12News asked Bush if an appeal should be done using taxpayer's money.

"This affects all of Beaumont ISD and not just one particular part. While some citizens may be contrary to this, we have to be careful and remember we as trustees represent our constituents, said Bush.

Thursday's meeting is set for 5 p.m. in the Board Room of the BISD Administration Building.
