Woman faces federal charges for allegedly throwing shoe at Hillary Clinton

By CNN Political Unit

An Arizona woman now faces federal charges for allegedly throwing a shoe at Hillary Clinton.

Alison Ernst, 36, was arrested on Monday in Phoenix, the Secret Service said.

Ernst allegedly tossed a shoe at the former secretary of state and possible 2016 presidential candidate, who was on stage for a speech at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Clinton ducked as the shoe flew by. Ernst was quickly detained. She did not have a ticket to the event and eluded hotel security, officials said.

A Las Vegas police report said Ernst took the shoe from her purse and after being detained, she "appeared to be in an agitated state but aware of what she had just done."

Local authorities are weighing disorderly conduct charges, and federal authorities in Phoenix filed a complaint alleging she violated access restrictions in place around Clinton's event.

CNN's Evan Perez, Dan Merica and Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.
