Community reacts to TEA takeover of BISD

Posted: Updated:

Reaction from the community about the takeover of the Beaumont Independent School District has been mixed.  It seems a lot of people, especially parents of BISD students, are relieved that things with are finally moving forward.

BISD parent Brittney Burdick said she is thankful that the Texas Education Agency cared enough about the Beaumont school district to intervene. Burdick also said the takeover is not something to be proud of, but it is a step in the right direction.

"When we bring in new folks with new excitement maybe new ideas then that excitement from our leadership will filter down to our teacher and students who will regain a sense of pride in their district and regain a sense of desire to accomplish great things," Burdick said.

BISD Trustee Mike Neil said despite the three other continuing investigations of the district, he considered the takeover a victory.

"The only way to fix the problem was for us to be removed or for us to remove ourselves and let some more people come in who aren't so entrenched in the issues," Neil said.

In a statement made to the Beaumont Enterprise, Trustee Zenobia Bush disagreed and said the current board will not give up.

"I have expected from the beginning an unfavorable ruling based on the people involved," Bush said. "This is TEA Party (the anti-government group, not the Texas Education Agency) politics at work and it has never been about the students at BISD. It has always been about control of this board."

Even though many people in the community agree that a district takeover is not something to be proud of, Burdick said it's a step in the right direction and she's grateful for those taking action to improve the district.

"Thank you for caring about our kids and our district and taking an interest in a district that's hurting," Burdick said.
