Community comes together to remember life of shooting victim

Posted: Updated:

It was a sight no parent should ever have to see: their child being carried out of a church in a casket.

Hundreds came to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Saturday to pay their respects and honor the life of Dominique Reed, just 22 years old when she was shot and killed at the intersection of 11th Street and Laurel the morning of April 3.

Police are still working to identify the shooter, who remains on the loose. The suspect has only been described as a short, heavy-set Hispanic man with an eye abnormality described as cross-eyed.  Police believe he was driving a dark older model GM truck and that he was carrying a rifle.

Those who knew and loved the young mother of a two year old son came by the dozens to say goodbye at Saturday's funeral service, some wearing t-shirts with Reed's face on them. It was a somber, yet faith-filled farewell to a woman whose life was cut short far too soon.

Edward Willis, a former classmate of Reed's, spoke at the service. He told the crowd what a wonderful friend Reed was, and also had a message for those in attendance. He reminded everyone to change their lives for the better starting today, because you never know if you'll still be here tomorrow.

Reed was buried at Live Oak Memorial Park following the funeral service.
