UPDATE: Shacobi Yates gets 12-year sentence

UPDATE: Shacobi Yates was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for a 2009 aggravated robbery in which Peter Pumphrey was fatally beaten.

It was a somber family reunion at the Jefferson County Courthouse Thursday as those closest to Peter Pumphrey waited to learn how one of the men responsible for his death will be punished.

Those family members include four of Pumphrey's five siblings.

The oldest brother, Gregory said, "It's been four long years without our brother."

Pumphrey was robbed and beaten at his home in December 2009.  He died the following day of blunt force trauma to the head.

Four suspects were arrested, including two juveniles.  Shacobi Yates was just 16, Bryan Ardoin was 14.  The other two involved were Michael Green and Tevin Williams.  All of them, except Yates, pleaded guilty.

Green was sentenced to 35 years in prison, Williams to 20 years and Ardoin to 15 years.

Yates' trial started Monday, and Thursday, jurors found him guilty of aggravated robbery, just like the three others.

The jury deliberated for three hours on the sentencing phase Thursday, before the judge sent them home.   They'll be back Friday at 9 a.m. to continue.

Yates' punishment could range from probation to life in prison.

Prosecutors charged the four men with aggravated robbery, instead of murder, because they could never determine who struck the fatal blow.

Gregory Pumphrey says the conviction alone is a "big burden off our shoulders".
