BISD Superintendent appoints new "Special Accreditation Committee"

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois has created what he believes may be a solution to the district's problems: a "Special Accreditation Committee" consisting of about 16 various community leaders handpicked by Chargois himself to oversee district operations.

"These are individuals who I've watched or had relationships with throughout our community," said Chargois.

The committee was announced at Tuesday's board meeting.

Chargois explained that the committee, which includes doctors, lawyers, accountants and church pastors, will be divided into 5 subcommittees: Finance, Student Achievement, Governance & Management, Community Involvement, and Student Support Services (transportation, health services, etc.).

One of the members of the finance subcommittee is Nathan Cross, a certified public accountant with more than 40 years experience who also serves as chairman of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

"We won't be hands on, we will be more of an oversight type committee... We have to be a watchdog over the assets," said Cross.

A member of the students support services subcommittee is Michael Perez, executive director of the local Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.
"The hope of this process is to restore some trust in this school district, if that is possible. This is a very shrewd move, it is late in the game," said Perez.

"People have said it's too little too late, and that may or not be true, it certainly should have been done much sooner," said Cross.

"We know that we're in a sense behind the 8-ball, but I believe we understand it's never too late to do what's right," said Chargois.

Chargois is now calling on the newly formed committee to go out and recruit even more members of the community to build relationships and to help keep an eye on the district.

Chargois says he plans to meet with the Special Accreditation Committee at least once a month to discuss any concerns.
