Community hits Supt. Chargois with questions at 'Let's Talk' forum

BEAUMONT -

The Beaumont Independent School District is planning more community forums despite mixed reviews following Monday's 'Let's Talk' forum.

Roughly 300 people packed the administration building's board room for the forum. The district required people to write questions on paper. It was up to the district's discretion which ones would be asked.

Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois answered some of the questions.  Some examples include, why has he not pursued money forfeited by embattled Electrician Calvin Walker.

The school board did eventually seek the money but a judge ruled that because district officials said they were satisfied with Walker's work and the district was not a victim, it would not receive any money.

Chargois was asked whether teacher's pay would be frozen next year. He responded saying he will try to find every dollar he can for taxpayers and staff.

The biggest interruption came after Chargois was asked why the district requires background checks on volunteers but not on high profile jobs referring to embattled football coach Plez Atkins.

Chargois says he dropped the ball, but picked it back up.

Some people felt Chargois danced around questions while others believed he provided fair and proper answers.

Chargois was also asked about why the district bussed people to the meeting if some field trips have been canceled due to budget concerns.

He said because it was very important for the community.

There were a stack of questions unanswered. The district says it plans to post those questions with answers on its website or on a podcast sometime in the future.
