West Brook H. S. grad helps local girls in a big way

With high school prom just a few weeks away, one West Brook High School grad is doing what she can to help young women in Beaumont facing tough financial times.

More than 100 ladies from West Brook, Ozen, and Central high schools had their pick of more than 800 beautiful prom dresses to choose from Saturday... free of charge.

It was all part of Candace Dixon-Ford's "Project Beautiful Me", which was held Saturday afternoon at Triumph Church in Beaumont.

Dixon-Ford is a West Brook graduate who lives in Houston. She is the wife of retired NBA player TJ Ford. Dixon-Ford started Project Beautiful Me last year in Houston and wanted to bring it to her hometown this year.

"We don't want any girl to miss out on a very pivotal time in their life which is their high school senior prom, so we want to encourage them and help them find that beautiful dress," said Dixon-Ford.

The dresses were donated by the community and collected by Munro's dry cleaning.

"I think what these ladies are doing is phenomenal, it means so much because I'm saving up for college so it's a really big help," said Ozen senior Jasmine Simien.

The event wasn't just about giving out free dresses, though. A number of motivational speakers talked to the girls, hoping to empower them by building their self-esteem and teaching valuable life skills.

All the girls  had to submit an application and write an essay in order to take part in today's event.
