City of Groves keeps memory of young girl alive

Posted: Updated:

The city of Groves has proclaimed Saturday as the "6th annual Avery Anne Guerra Day."

It's a day that recognizes a little girl who passed away with congenital heart defects.

Avery was four-years-old when she passed away. She lived life to the fullest by smiling and dancing along the way.

She learned ballet at Debbie's Dance Etc. from her aunt, Debbie Broussard. The two shared a special bond that is being carried on even after Avery's passing.

"She is my heart; a precious little angel. She touched the lives of everyone that she came in contact with. No one met her that they didn't remember her," said Broussard.

Each year, hundreds show up for the Avery Anne Guerra benefit which raises money for college scholarships.

There's a car wash, links sale, washer tournament, blood drive and auction.

"Her memory lives on in all the girls that are here. They all remember her and remember her even more through this (benefit)," said Mandy Gibson.

Gibson's daughter, Maura, was in Avery's baby ballet class.

"It's so much more than a dance studio. It's a family," she said.

The dance family calls themselves "Avery's Army"; a group of troops who work year round to put on Avery Day.

Avery Day is Saturday, April 5 at Bruce's Market Basket in Groves. It will be held from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The money raised also helps other children in Southeast Texas who suffer from congenital heart defects.
